A Few New Features To Try

March 9th, 2010

We pushed out a fairly significant build this evening. There were many small bug fixes as well as a few new features added. If you would like to test or are just interested in what’s new, the new features include:

  • You can now edit your submissions. You can reach this feature from the comments page, near the top of the headline of the submission. Edit history is also available as well for items that have been modified.
  • You can now change your password in the account page. You should receive an e-mail after a password change just to let you know in case it wasn’t changed by you.
  • There is a 30 second time limit in place between submissions. This is an attempt to prevent the item from being submitted multiple times if the server is slow to respond for some reason and the user submits the item more than once.

Again, if you get the chance to test any of these and find something you think is not right, please let us know!

Thanks!

Power issues

March 9th, 2010

Yakimbe was just down for about 45 minutes while we addressed a power issue. The site is back up and running as normal. We apologize for the interruption in service.

Site updates

March 6th, 2010

We made some minor additions to the site today, most notably a tooltip that displays subhead information when you mouseover a headline. Also, the comments page was modified slightly to include the subhead on that page as well.

Welcome Ignite Lansing participants!

March 6th, 2010

Ignite Lansing 3.0 was the unofficial launch of Yakimbe.com. Welcome to anyone finding our site from this great event!

Yakimbe is a locally based (yup, that means Yakimbe is 100% built and maintined in Lansing) site that aspires to make great local news and information easier to find, share and discuss.

Yakimbe (that’s pronounced Yea Kim Be, in case you’re wondering) is built on the idea that there are lots of things happening and being posted online that get missed by mainstream media. Yakimbe’s goal is to provide a great way to share information from many sources, including personal blogs, local press releases or mainstream media sources, to help the mid-Michigan community stay informed and involved in what’s happening in their community.

Yakimbe is currently in it’s first ‘draft,’ or beta, and as novelist Daniel Hogan said tonight, the first draft might be crap.

We hope you’ll find our first draft isn’t crap, but we know we have lots of room for improvement. That’s what we need your help. Join our site, participate, use it, break it and tell us how we can improve the experience.

Before you start posting, please review our community guidelines, and keep in mind that Yakimbe’s goal is to share LOCAL news and events.

Welcome to Yakimbe!

Restrictions are now in place so duplicate vote cannot be performed on a submission. You can also undo your vote, should you change your mind at some point.

Jesse and I will be at Ignite Lansing tomorrow night to check out what else is going on around here, as well as promoting Yakimbe. See you there!

Welcome to Yakimbe

March 2nd, 2010

Hello, and thanks for your interest in Yakimbe. The site is a work in progress; as such most of our basic functionality is in place but the details have yet to be worked out, as well as many features added. I’m short on time at the moment, but here’s a quick list of issues we are aware of:

  • Multiple upvotes/downvotes are permitted. Soon you will only be allowed one vote per item
  • Posters cannot currently modify posts or comments after submitting. This will be allowed soon

I will be expanding this list as I think of items or receive them from our testers.
